The Odia grammar allows you to manipulate the vocabulary to obtain multiple forms of a word. The grammatical rules below are the most important in Odia and help connect words or shape the structure. We start with the prepositions:
And: ଆଉ [ā'u] | Under: ତଳେ [taḷē] |
Before: ପୂର୍ବରୁ [pūrbaru] | After: ପରେ [parē] |
Inside: ଭିତରେ [bhitarē] | Outside: ବାହାରେ [bāhārē] |
With: ସହିତ [sahita] | But: କିନ୍ତୁ [kintu] |
For: ପାଇଁ [pā'im̐] | From: ଠାରୁ [ṭhāru] |
To: କୁ [ku] | In: ଭିତର [bhitara] |
To ask questions, use the following:
What?: କ’ଣ? [ka 'ṇa.] | Who?: କିଏ? [ki'ē.] |
How?: କିପରି [kipari] | Why?: କାହିଁକି? [kāhim̐ki.] |
Where?: କେଉଁଠାରେ [kē'um̐ṭhārē] |
Some of the most important time adverbs:
Never: ଆଦୌ ନୁହେଁ [ādau nuhēm̐] | Rarely: ବହୁତ କମ୍ [bahuta kam] |
Sometimes: ବେଳେବେଳେ [bēḷēbēḷē] | Usually: ସାଧାରଣତଃ [sādhāraṇataḥ] |
Always: ସବୁବେଳେ [sabubēḷē] | Very: ବହୁତ [bahuta] |
Most commonly used pronouns in Odia:
I: ମୁଁ [mum̐] | You: ତୁମେ [tumē] |
He: ସେ [sē] | She: ସେ [sē] |
We: ଆମେ [āmē] | They: ସେମାନେ [sēmānē] |
To express the possession of something [possessive form]:
My: ମୋର [mōra] | Your: ତୁମର [tumara] |
His: ତାଙ୍କର [tāṅkara] | Her: ତାଙ୍କର [tāṅkara] |
Our: ଆମର [āmara] | Their: ସେମାନଙ୍କର [sēmānaṅkara] |
Some random verbs to show how it's being used:
I speak English: ମୁଁ ଇଂଲିଶ୍ କହିପାରେ [mum̐ inliś kahipārē] |
You speak French: ତୁମେ ଫ୍ରେଞ୍ଚ୍ କୁହ [tumē phrēñc kuha] |
He speaks German: ସେ ଜର୍ମାନ୍ କୁହନ୍ତି [sē jarmān kuhanti] |
She speaks Italian: ସେ ଆରାବିକ୍ କୁହନ୍ତି [sē ārābik kuhanti] |
I visited France: ମୁଁ ଫ୍ରାନ୍ସ୍ ବୁଲିଛି [mum̐ phrāns bulichi] |
